Fleas: difficult pests to eliminate
Only a few millimeters in size, fleas are very difficult to spot and therefore to eliminate. While they have no real impact on human health, they can be a real nuisance for our pets. Cats and dogs catch fleas very easily, and once they've settled in, they're not easy to dislodge. They're all the more difficult to catch because, unlike ticks, which cling to the animal's skin, fleas don't stay in their fur, but lodge in carpets, cushions or kennels. A flea treatment must therefore be complete, so as not to leave any out, at the risk of seeing the phenomenon start all over again with a new proliferation.
Thanks to essential oils, fleas can be eliminated effectively and naturally. Simply create the following mixture in an empty bottle:
- Tea Tree essential oil (100 drops)
- True Lavender essential oil (100 drops)
- Clove essential oil (50 drops)
- Lemongrass essential oil (50 drops)
- Modified pharmaceutical alcohol (25 mL)
Why choose these essential oils?
This blend, also known as a synergy due to the beneficial effect of the essential oils on each other, should be applied with a spray bottle to surfaces likely to harbor fleas, i.e. places inhabited by pets (litter boxes, baskets, nests, etc.) and fabrics (cushions, carpets, etc.). The combination of these 4 essential oils is highly effective against fleas for the following reasons.
TeaTree contains terpinen-4-ol, a monoterpene alcohol with anti-parasitic properties, which attacks parasite cells and causes their death. Also effective against ticks, tea tree is an excellent antiseptic and antibacterial.
TrueLavenderworksdifferently against fleas. Its scent, which has a repellent effect on this type of insect, helps eliminate them. What's more, the monoterpene alcohol in lavender essential oil, linalool, optimizes Tea Tree's anti-parasite effects.
Clove alsocontainseugenol, a molecule specifically effective against insects. A member of the propenylphenol family, eugenol is recognized as a formidable weapon against parasites. Coupled with the terpinen-4-ol present in tea tree essential oil and the linalool that makes up True Lavender essential oil, this combination of active elements will provide a fatal assault on fleas.
Finally, lemongrass isrecommended for the treatment and elimination of fleas thanks to the presence in its essential oil of citrals, molecules of the monoterpene aldehyde family, which like other oils benefit from anti-parasitic virtues, whose characteristic is to be highly effective against external parasites. Like lavender, lemongrass has another quality: its lemony scent, similar to that of lemongrass, will scare away fleas while adding a pleasant touch to the mixture which, once applied in the apartment or house attacked by fleas, will leave a fresh, fruity scent in the treated space.
So, as we can see, essential oils are formidable weapons against fleas and other external parasites, thanks to properties that are specifically effective against this type of insect. Through their scent or molecular action, these oils attack fleas directly and also repel them preventively to eliminate fleas from the home naturally.
