How to use Menstrual Sponges
Preparation before first use
Before using a menstrual sponge for the first time, it's important to clean it and neutralize its pH. To do this, immerse the sponge in a solution of water and vinegar (ratio 1:2) and leave it to soak overnight.
Sterilization (optional)
We recommend sterilizing the sponge before first use, by boiling it for a few minutes in clean water. This step is optional, but may be advisable for reasons of hygiene.
Insertion and removal
Insertion
Before inserting the sponge, moisten it slightly to make it more flexible. Insertion is similar to that of a tampon, with the sponge placed deep under the cervix. Follow the specific instructions for each type of sponge (natural or sea sponge).
Removal
To remove the sponge, gently pinch its base and pull it out. If you have difficulty, relax and try again. A small thread sewn into the base of the sponge can also facilitate removal. We recommend emptying the sponge every 3 to 4 hours, depending on your menstrual flow. You can remove it, empty it and rinse it with clean water.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning between uses
Between uses, rinse the sponge thoroughly with clean water to remove any blood residue. You can also use a mild soap to wash it. Make sure the sponge is completely dry before reinserting it.
End-of-cycle cleaning
At the end of your menstrual cycle, wash the sponge with warm water and mild soap. For optimum hygiene, you can also sterilize the sponge again.
Storage and lifetime
After each cleaning, store the sponge in a clean, dry place. Under normal conditions of use and with proper care, our menstrual sponges have a shelf life of around 2 years.
Precautions for use
- Read the instructions carefully before using for the first time.
- Always wash your hands before handling the sponge to avoid contamination.
- If you feel pain or discomfort during use, remove the sponge and consult a healthcare professional.
- Be sure to clean the sponge thoroughly between uses to avoid infection.
Harvest
Our menstrual sponges come from the Hippospongia gossypina species, hand-harvested by divers in protected areas reserved for fishing. Each sponge is carefully cleaned, bleached and inspected to ensure it contains no foreign matter, such as small stones, sand or shell remains.
Packaging
Our menstrual sponges are available in standard sizes and can be cut to fit your needs perfectly.
